2. QUESTIONS FOR DISCUSSION 2.1 Middleware We built the LTDL using the University of Michigan’s DLXS middleware and the XPAT search engine. Some modifications were made to the software to optimize image displays and other features. The implementation we used – bibliographic class – does not readily accommodate searching text versions of document image files. We are faced with either a major upgrade of DLXS with the entanglements of modified code, or conversion to an entirely new middleware environment.
